Finding a funded PhD abroad is not mainly a search-engine problem. It is an evidence problem.
There are many pages that mention doctoral study, scholarships, research groups, and international programmes. Only some of them tell you whether there is a real opening, who may apply, what the funding covers, and where the application must go. A strong search helps you separate those pages early.
This guide gives you a method for doing that. It is written for STEM applicants looking outside their current country. It does not promise admission, funding, a visa, or a place in a particular university. Rules differ across institutions, funders, and applicant circumstances. The purpose is simpler: help you find the original source, understand what it says, identify what it does not say, and decide what to do next.
The central rule is this: use discovery pages to find leads, then use the university, employer, programme, funder, or government page that controls the decision.
Start with a clear definition of “funded”
“Funded PhD” is useful search language, but it is not a complete answer. It can describe several different arrangements.
In one case, a university or research institute advertises a doctoral role connected to a research project. The page may look like a job vacancy. It may name a project, a department, a contact, a start date, and a route to apply. In another case, a doctoral programme recruits a cohort and later assigns projects or supervisors. A third route is an external fellowship where the applicant applies with a host institution. Some programmes offer a tuition waiver but not living support. Others describe a stipend but leave tuition, insurance, travel, or duration unclear.
That is why a good search does not stop at the words “funded” or “scholarship.” It asks a more useful set of questions.
- Who is offering the opportunity?
- Is this a job-style vacancy, a programme place, a studentship, or a fellowship route?
- What support is actually written on the page?
- Who can apply under the published rules?
- Which page controls the application and deadline?
You do not need to answer every question perfectly on the first day. You do need to avoid filling gaps with assumptions.
For example, a listing may say that a project is “fully funded.” That is a useful signal, but it still needs reading. Does it state a salary or stipend? Are tuition and mandatory fees addressed? Is the funding connected to a specific project? Is it open to applicants who pay international fees? What is the duration? If the page does not answer one of these questions, write “not stated.” That is more useful than guessing.
The same care applies to phrases that sound reassuring: “competitive studentship,” “financial support available,” “funding subject to approval,” or “scholarship opportunities.” They may be relevant, but they are not the same as a confirmed funding package.
Learn the main routes before you search widely
You will search faster when you can recognise the route in front of you. The names change across systems, but most funded doctoral opportunities fit one of these patterns.
A project-funded doctoral opportunity
This route begins with a funded research project. A supervisor, department, or research institute needs a doctoral researcher for defined work. The page may be placed in a university job board, a research institute vacancy system, or an employer portal. It often describes the research problem, expected methods, a named group, the application process, and a closing date.
The advantage of this route is clarity about the research project. You can usually see whether the topic, method, and environment make sense for you before applying. The limits are equally important. A project can be funded while the page is unclear about tuition, international eligibility, or the exact degree route. Read the vacancy alongside the relevant graduate-school or programme page.
A doctoral programme or cohort route
Some universities recruit doctoral candidates into a programme rather than into one named project. The programme may have broad research areas, a structured training model, several possible supervisors, and one central application process. Funding may be attached to all places, a defined number of places, or a separate competition.
This route asks you to read two layers. First, read the programme page for entry requirements, research areas, documents, and application process. Then read the funding page or award terms to understand whether the support applies to your situation. Do not assume that programme admission automatically includes funding unless the official pages say so.
A studentship or training-partnership route
National funders and university partnerships often support doctoral training through providers. The provider may be a university, a group of universities, or a partnership with research institutes and non-academic organisations. The applicant normally applies through the provider rather than directly to the national funder.
UK Research and Innovation, for example, says that it gives training grants to providers, which then offer studentships. Its guidance tells prospective students to apply to the provider offering the studentship, not directly to UKRI. That structure is useful to recognise, but it does not answer the conditions of any one studentship. The provider's current page and offer terms remain the controlling sources for a real application.
An individual fellowship or host-led route
Some funding is awarded to the researcher rather than tied to one advertised doctoral project. You may need to identify a host institution, a department, and sometimes a supervisor before submitting a fellowship application. These routes often have separate eligibility, mobility, host, and timing rules.
Do not treat a fellowship overview page as an open position. It may explain a route, while the current call, host requirements, and application documents decide whether you can use it. The same is true for postdoctoral fellowships, which are covered in more detail in the postdoc guide.
An employed doctoral role
In some systems, a doctoral researcher is recruited as an employee. The listing may state salary, contract length, working hours, workplace, and duties alongside doctoral enrolment. That can be a strong sign that the role is financed, but it still does not answer every question. The graduate-school page may control the degree route; the employer page may control contract details; and government pages may control immigration questions.
The point is not to memorise labels. It is to notice who owns each part of the opportunity.
Search the places where the original page is likely to appear
Most applicants begin with a broad search engine query. That is reasonable, but it should be the start of the work, not the final source. Search engines can surface old listings, copied descriptions, directories, social posts, and pages that are no longer connected to an application route.
Build your search around sources that are close to the decision.
University and employer vacancy pages
For project-funded and employed doctoral roles, the university or research institute vacancy page is usually the first place to check. It may sit under “jobs,” “vacancies,” “work with us,” “doctoral positions,” “research careers,” or a department page. These pages are useful because they normally name the recruiting organisation and link to the application process.
When you open a vacancy page, do not read only the title. Look for the research project, degree route, funding wording, named department or group, required documents, closing date, and instructions about contact. If the page directs you to another portal, save both links and identify which one accepts the application.
An employer page can tell you that a role is open. It may not tell you everything about doctoral admission. A graduate-school page can tell you entry requirements. It may not tell you whether the project is still recruiting. Keep these roles separate.
Doctoral school and graduate admissions pages
Programme-based opportunities often live here. Look for “doctoral programmes,” “graduate research,” “doctoral school,” “PhD admissions,” “research degrees,” or the name of the academic department. These pages help you understand the formal route: which degree is awarded, which documents are required, whether a supervisor is assigned before application, and whether funding is separate.
They are especially useful when a research group page looks interesting but does not advertise an open role. The group may be active and relevant, but an active group is not proof that it has a funded place available. The admissions or vacancy page tells you whether there is a route to apply.
Department, laboratory, and research-centre pages
These pages are useful for research fit. They help you see current projects, methods, facilities, collaborators, and the language a group uses to describe its work. They are not usually the final source for a deadline or funding condition.
Use them to improve your search. If a laboratory works on a question close to yours, extract the terms it uses: methods, materials, datasets, systems, technical tools, diseases or phenomena, and partner organisations. Use those terms to search the university's jobs page, graduate-school page, and funder pages.
Official funder pages
Funder pages are essential when the route is a fellowship, scholarship, national training scheme, or funded network. They can explain who funds the route, who applies, what documents or host relationship are required, and where current calls are published.
They are not interchangeable with a university offer. A national funder can set broad rules while a provider controls recruitment. A fellowship call can describe the award while the host controls local admission. Read both layers when both are involved.
Research institutes and public research organisations
Do not limit your search to university homepages. Many STEM PhD opportunities are connected to public research organisations, national laboratories, university-affiliated hospitals, technical institutes, or joint centres. The degree may be awarded through a partner university while the daily research work happens elsewhere.
When you find this kind of opportunity, check four things: the institute's vacancy page, the degree-awarding university or programme, the funding or employment terms, and the named research group. If one of those pages is missing, that is a question to resolve before application work starts.
Use discovery platforms for discovery, not proof
Discovery platforms are valuable because they help you see patterns outside your existing network. They can reveal fields, countries, institutions, and route types you may not have searched directly. Their limitation is simple: they are one step away from the organisation that makes the decision.
EURAXESS is a useful example. Its Jobs and Opportunities search lets researchers filter offers by type, country, research field, researcher profile, academic level, sector, funding programme, and funding type. It includes job, funding, and hosting offers, and its filters explicitly include PhD and postdoc positions. That makes it a practical place to discover European research routes. Once you find a lead, however, open the host or employer page and use that page to check the application route, current status, funding, and deadline.
DAAD provides another useful example for Germany. Its guidance points applicants to PhDGermany and International Programmes databases, which help users locate doctoral positions and internationally oriented programmes. DAAD says that after finding a suitable offer, applicants apply to the offering university. That final step matters. The university or research institute page is the source that controls the opportunity.
Use the same rule for any directory, even a respected one:
- Save the directory link as a discovery record.
- Find the university, employer, programme, or funder page behind it.
- Save that original page as the controlling source.
- Compare the two pages if the wording differs.
- Use the controlling page for your application decision.
If you cannot find a direct page, do not spend hours trying to rescue the lead. Mark it unverified, set a short reminder to check later if appropriate, and continue your search.
Build a search vocabulary from your actual research interests
A broad phrase such as “funded PhD in biotechnology” can produce thousands of results. It may be useful for learning the landscape, but it is weak for finding a project that fits you. Better searches use the language of the research itself.
Start with a one-paragraph research-focus note. It does not need to be polished. It should answer five questions.
- What problem or phenomenon do you want to study?
- In which setting does that problem matter?
- Which methods do you already know or want to learn?
- Which materials, data, instruments, systems, or populations are relevant?
- What kind of research environment would help you develop?
For example, “I want a PhD in artificial intelligence” is too broad to guide a serious search. A more useful note might refer to a problem, a method, and a setting: machine learning methods for analysing medical images, robust control for energy systems, numerical modelling of materials, or genomic approaches to a defined biological question. The exact words will differ by field. The structure is what matters.
Then create four groups of terms.
Problem terms
These describe what you want to understand or change. They might be a scientific mechanism, an engineering challenge, a modelling problem, a type of system, or a research question.
Method terms
These describe the techniques that appear in real project descriptions. They can include experimental methods, computational methods, modelling approaches, instruments, data types, or analytical frameworks.
Context terms
These describe where the research sits: a material, organism, environment, technology, health condition, industrial process, or social system. Use them carefully. A context term should help you find research, not push you into a generic country or city page.
Route terms
These help you find the right kind of opportunity: “PhD position,” “doctoral researcher,” “studentship,” “doctoral candidate,” “research degree,” “PhD vacancy,” “doctoral network,” or the local term used by the institution.
Combine these groups rather than relying on one keyword. Search the official jobs site of an institution using a method plus route term. Search a funder's site using a field term plus “doctoral.” Search a department page for a current project, then search the project name with “PhD” or “vacancy.”
This approach also helps you find interdisciplinary work. A project may sit in materials science, engineering, computer science, medicine, environmental science, or a joint centre. The department name alone may hide it. Research question and method terms often reveal it.
Turn your interests into a focused search map
A good search map gives each search a purpose. It stops you from running the same broad query every few days and hoping that a different result appears.
Begin by choosing a small number of research directions that you could genuinely explain in an application. They do not have to be identical. A person interested in environmental engineering, for example, may have one direction around water treatment, another around process modelling, and another around sensing or monitoring. The important point is that each direction has a research question and a set of terms that appear in real work.
For each direction, make a short map with four columns: question, methods, research setting, and route words. A materials applicant might combine “battery degradation” with “electrochemical characterisation” and “doctoral researcher.” A computational biology applicant might combine “single-cell analysis” with “statistical genomics” and “PhD position.” An engineering applicant might combine “structural health monitoring” with “signal processing” and “doctoral candidate.” These are not magic phrases. They are starting points for finding the language used by active groups and current opportunities.
Then use the map in three different ways.
Search for open roles from the research language
Use a question or method term with a route term. Add the name of an institution only when you already have a reason to look there. If you use a web search engine, prefer results from university, institute, employer, and funder domains. Once you find a useful result, move to that organisation's own vacancy or programme system.
The aim is not to create a long list from the search-results page. The aim is to learn which organisations are using the language that matches your interests and whether they have a genuine application route.
Search inside a known organisation
When you find a university, laboratory, or institute that appears relevant, search within its own public site. Look for its jobs, vacancies, doctoral programmes, graduate research, and department pages. The organisation may use a title you would not have guessed. One university may call a role a “doctoral researcher”; another may call it a “research student,” “graduate researcher,” or “PhD candidate.”
Search the organisation's site using a method or project term as well as “PhD.” A relevant opportunity may be listed under a project title without using your field label in the headline. If the site has weak internal search, use a search engine with the institution's domain, then return to the original page before recording anything.
Search from a project or publication back to a route
Sometimes the most useful lead is not a vacancy. It may be a recent project page, an institute news item, a laboratory's publication list, or a funded collaboration. Treat it as a research lead. Note the group, project language, and possible supervisor or contact. Then look for a separate recruitment route through the organisation's official pages.
This is especially helpful in fields where funded positions are linked to project names rather than broad discipline titles. It also helps you avoid a common mistake: writing to a researcher simply because you saw a relevant paper, without checking whether their group has a published route for doctoral recruitment.
Search the funding route separately
Some opportunities are easier to find through the funding structure than through the research topic. A doctoral training partnership, a funder programme, or a scholarship scheme may publish its own projects or provider list. In this case, search the official funder's page first, identify the provider or host, and then use the provider's current pages to see whether there is a call you can enter.
Keep the two layers in your notes. The funder page explains the scheme. The provider or host page tells you whether there is an opportunity you can act on now. This distinction becomes important when a scheme exists but its next recruitment round is not yet open.
Keep your search geography useful, not arbitrary
You do not need to search every country at the beginning. A manageable first search can focus on systems or institutions where your research area has visible activity, where you can understand the published application route, and where a real funding path is stated. Geography may affect funding, entry, employment, and immigration rules, but it should not replace research fit.
Avoid using a country name as the main reason to save an opportunity. Instead, record why that organisation, group, project, or programme is relevant. This produces a stronger shortlist and prevents your search from becoming a collection of generic “study abroad” pages.
Treat search queries as working notes
Save the queries that produce useful official pages. A query that finds a current university vacancy system may be worth repeating next month. A query that only produces directories, old pages, and copied listings can be changed or dropped.
Over time, your search map becomes more specific. You learn the names of research centres, project types, methods, funder schemes, and route terms that belong to your area. That knowledge is more useful than a single large search session because it lets you find better leads without starting from zero.
Read the page before you save the lead
Saving every interesting title creates a large, weak shortlist. Instead, do a quick first pass while the page is open. This should take a few minutes, not an hour.
Check the page owner
Who published the page? A university, employer, research institute, department, funder, or government authority has a different role from a directory or social post. Record the organisation and the page type.
Check the route
Is it a vacancy, programme, studentship, fellowship, network, or general research page? If it is a general research page, it may be a useful fit lead but not an opportunity yet. Label it honestly.
Check the research work
Read the project description for the question, methods, expected skills, research environment, and named contact. You are not deciding whether you are perfect for it. You are deciding whether it deserves further checking.
Check the funding words
Record exactly what the page says. “Salary,” “stipend,” “studentship,” “tuition covered,” “fees paid,” “funding available,” and “subject to funding” are different phrases. Do not translate one into another.
Check who may apply
Look for degree, language, residence, nationality, mobility, fee-status, or programme requirements. If the vacancy does not include them, look for a linked graduate-school or funder page. If they remain unclear, note the question.
Check the application path
Find the application button, portal, document list, deadline, and contact instruction. A clear application route is often more important than a long project description. If a page is interesting but no route is visible, label it “research lead, not verified opportunity.”
Check freshness
Look for a published date, closing date, status, archive marker, or portal status. If the page is old or the deadline has passed, do not assume a new cycle will follow. Save it as background information only if it helps your future search.
Follow the route across the pages that control it
Many good opportunities cannot be understood from one page alone. That does not make them suspicious. It means that different organisations own different parts of the decision.
An employed doctoral role may have a vacancy page with the project description and application portal, a graduate-school page with the degree requirements, and a department page that explains the research environment. A programme-based place may have an admissions page, a separate funding page, and a page for a specific research track. A fellowship route may involve a funder call, a host institution's internal process, and an admissions process that happens on a different schedule.
Your task is not to collect every page connected to the institution. Your task is to find the minimum set of pages that answers the decision you are making.
Start with the page that asks for an application
For a live vacancy, this is usually the recruitment page or application portal. It should tell you the role title, the organisation, the application route, and the closing point. Save it first. If the page links to a project description, graduate-school information, or funding terms, open those links in a new tab and add them to the same record.
For a doctoral programme, the admissions page may be the main route. Look for the programme's actual application instructions, not only its general overview. Some pages are written for future applicants and provide clear steps. Others describe the programme but do not show a current intake or route. Keep the difference in your notes.
For an individual award, begin with the current call or solicitation. A general page about a fellowship can remain useful background, but a current call should identify the round, the official documents, and the route to apply. If you cannot find a current call, do not write the scheme down as an open opportunity.
Identify the funding page that supports the claim
When a vacancy says it is funded, look for the page or section that explains the support. It may be on the vacancy itself. It may be in a linked studentship notice, programme handbook, or award terms. Record the language exactly and keep the link with the opportunity.
Do not use a university-wide scholarship page to prove that one project is funded. A university can offer several scholarship routes with different rules, and a project can have funding for some applicants but not others. The right evidence is the page that connects the support to that particular route.
The same caution applies in the other direction. A funded project may not repeat every financial detail on a short vacancy page. If it links to formal terms, read the terms. If it does not, write down what is missing rather than trying to infer it from another programme.
Find the formal academic entry page
Funding and admission are often connected, but they are not always the same decision. The page for the PhD programme, graduate school, or academic department can explain whether you need a particular degree background, language evidence, official transcripts, references, a research proposal, or supervisor approval. It can also explain whether a separate application is required after a job-style recruitment process.
This does not mean that you must complete every admissions check before saving a lead. It means you should know which academic page will answer the question when you reach that stage. Add the link before you forget where you found it.
Treat external application portals carefully
It is normal for an institution to use a separate recruitment or admissions portal. A link that takes you away from the main website is not automatically a problem. Check whether the official page points to it, whether the organisation's name is clear, and whether the role or programme information matches.
If a third-party platform is the only page you can find, look for a connection back to the university, employer, institute, or funder. If you cannot establish that connection, keep it as a discovery lead rather than a verified opportunity. Do not upload personal documents to a site merely because a copied listing asks for them.
Separate a named contact from an invitation to contact
A vacancy may name a supervisor, project lead, administrator, or recruitment contact. That does not always mean the person expects a general enquiry. Read the instructions. If the page says “apply through the portal,” follow that route. If it invites questions about the project, use the contact only for a focused question that the published material does not answer.

Use a page set, not a pile of tabs
For a credible opportunity, you will usually need only a small set of saved links:
- the controlling vacancy, programme, or current call;
- the funding terms or source that supports the funding claim, if separate;
- the relevant graduate-school, programme, or entry-requirements page;
- the application portal or official instructions; and
- the research group or department page that helps you judge fit.
Save the date you checked each important page. If there are several pages, note what each one is for. For example: “vacancy, current status”; “programme, documents”; “funder, scheme terms.” This makes the evidence readable when you return weeks later.
Decide whether an opportunity is current enough to act on
The internet keeps old research pages visible. That is helpful for learning about a field, but it can create false hope during an application search. A project may be scientifically active while its recruitment page is closed. A scholarship scheme may exist while its current competition is not open. A directory may continue showing an offer after the host has removed it.
Use direct evidence of current status whenever it is available.
Look for an explicit status signal
A closing date, an open application button, a recruitment portal that accepts submissions, or a page marked as open is useful evidence. So is an archive label, a closed notice, or a deadline that has clearly passed. Record what the page shows rather than making a prediction about the next cycle.
Some opportunities use phrases such as “applications are considered on a rolling basis.” This tells you something about how applications may be reviewed, but it does not remove the need to check the live page. Look for an application route, a current date, or an official statement that the opportunity remains open. If the page gives no current signal, write “status not confirmed.”
Check whether the instructions still match the page
An old page often reveals itself through broken application links, references to a past year, a closed portal, or project information that no longer appears on the department or institute site. These are signals to investigate, not proof by themselves. The best next step is to find the current jobs or admissions page for that organisation and search there.
Do not assume that a similar title means the same opportunity has reopened. Projects, funding sources, degree requirements, and application routes can change. Save the old page only if it teaches you useful search language or points you to an active group.
Use careful contact only when it is justified
If a page is clearly current but leaves one central fact unresolved, a short question may be reasonable when the page provides a contact route for enquiries. Ask about the specific missing point. Do not ask the contact to repeat information that is visible on the page, assess your entire profile by email, or predict whether you will be admitted.
If the page is old and no current route is visible, it is normally better to search the organisation's current vacancy and programme pages before contacting anyone. This protects your time and keeps the search professional.
Give every lead a practical status
Use a simple status label in your shortlist. For example, “open and checked,” “requires verification,” “future route to monitor,” “research lead only,” or “closed.” The names are not important. The distinction is. A status prevents an old lead from quietly becoming part of your active application list.
Build a shortlist that keeps the evidence
Your shortlist should be a small decision tool, not a collection of bookmarks. A spreadsheet, database, or personal workspace is fine. The tool matters less than the fields you record.
Use one row or record per opportunity. Keep the original source close to the decision notes. The following structure is enough for most early searches.

This record makes your later work faster. When you compare opportunities, you will not need to remember where a claim came from. When you write an application, you can return to the original source. When a page changes, you can see what you had checked and when.
Keep a separate place for research leads. A research group, paper, laboratory, or current project can be valuable even when it is not advertising a position. Do not mix it with verified opportunities. The difference protects your time and makes your shortlist easier to trust.
Make decisions from evidence, not from a vague score
At this stage, it is tempting to give every opportunity one overall rating. That can hide the exact reason a lead is strong or weak. A better approach is to keep a few separate judgments and make them visible.
Research fit
Ask whether the project or programme connects to a question you care about, methods you can contribute to or learn, and an environment that can support the work. You do not need to match every line of a project description. A doctoral position is also a place to learn. But you should be able to explain the connection between your background, your interests, and the work described on the official page.
Write two or three sentences in your own words. Avoid copying the vacancy text into your notes. A useful note might say that the project is close to your interest because it uses a method you have worked with, but that you still need to understand a new application area. This is more honest and more useful than “excellent fit.”
Evidence strength
Ask whether you have found the pages that actually support the opportunity. A lead is stronger when the current application route, funding wording, eligibility information, and source date are visible. It is weaker when it depends on an old directory entry, a social post, or a general department page.
Evidence strength is not the same as whether you are likely to be admitted. It only tells you how confidently you understand the opportunity at this moment. A highly relevant project can still need verification. A clearly documented programme can still be a poor research fit.
Readiness for the next action
Ask what you can do next without guessing. An “apply now” lead has a visible route, a current deadline or status, and a document list you can start working from. A “verify first” lead may be promising but have one central unanswered question. A “monitor” lead may point to a future call or an active group without a current opening.
These labels prevent a common problem: treating every interesting page as equally urgent. Most searches become easier when you have a short active list, a wider monitor list, and a separate collection of research leads.
Fit and evidence can disagree
Suppose you find a project that looks almost perfect but the only information is a year-old announcement. Its research fit may be strong; its evidence strength is low. Keep it as a research lead and search for the current route. Do not begin an application based on the old announcement.
Now suppose you find a well-documented current vacancy that is only loosely related to your interests. Its evidence strength may be high; its research fit may be low. You can decide not to apply without questioning the quality of the source.
Keeping these judgments separate makes your choices easier to explain. It also helps when you return to the list after a few weeks. You can see whether a lead needs more research, a direct question, or no further attention.
Record the reason for removing a lead
Removing an opportunity is part of a good search. If you decide not to continue, write a brief reason: closed, funding unclear, eligibility mismatch, research fit too weak, application route unavailable, or timing not workable. This stops you from reopening the same unsuitable lead later simply because the title still sounds attractive.
The goal is not a large shortlist. The goal is a list where each active opportunity has a clear source, a clear next step, and a reason to deserve your time.
The Opportunity Truth Check
Use this check before you start tailoring a CV, statement, proposal, or email. It is deliberately simple. Its purpose is to reveal what is known and what still needs a direct answer.
1. What is the original source?
